Job Posting & Description – Traditional Cook & Cleaner Early Childhood Education Daycare
Position Summary
The Traditional Cook & Cleaner is responsible for preparing daily meals and snacks rooted in Indigenous cultural practices while maintaining a safe, clean environment for children ages 0–6. This role supports children’s physical, emotional, and cultural well‑being through food, cleanliness, seasonal knowledge, and respectful caregiving.
Key Responsibilities
Cooking & Nutrition
- Prepare breakfasts, lunches, and snacks daily including
traditional foods when available.
- Follow nutritional guidelines for young children (0–6).
- Plan culturally-informed seasonal menus.
- Safely label, store, and rotate food (FIFO).
- Maintain a clean, sanitary kitchen environment.
- Accommodate allergies, dietary needs, and restrictions.
- Assist with garden harvesting, food preservation, and processing when needed.
Traditional & Cultural Food Practices
- Incorporate traditional foods such as bannock, berries,
wild game, fish, and seasonal harvests.
- Share food teachings and cultural knowledge with children in age-appropriate
ways.
- Participate in feasts, ceremonies, cultural events, and land-based learning.
- Work with Elders, harvesters, and knowledge keepers respectfully.
Cleaning & Sanitation
- Clean kitchen, eating areas, and designated daycare
spaces.
- Sanitize surfaces, toys, mats, and equipment regularly.
- Conduct laundry including bedding, linens, and towels.
- Safely store and manage cleaning products.
- Assist with spills, messes, and daily childcare upkeep.
Health & Safety
- Follow food safety & childcare health guidelines.
- Maintain fridge/freezer temps and food logs.
- Report hazards, equipment issues, or supply shortages.
- Follow allergy protocols, emergency plans, and infection control.
Qualifications
Required:
- Experience cooking for families or groups.
- Basic knowledge of food safety & sanitation.
- Comfort working around children.
- Willing to learn cultural food knowledge.
Assets:
- Food Handling Certificate.
- Experience in childcare or kitchen settings.
- Knowledge of traditional foods and harvesting.
- First Aid/CPR.
Lines of communication
• The Traditional Cook/Cleaner must report to their Manager, to this program.
