Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Waste Management and Roads Supervisors, assist is all aspects of operations.

Duties

• Lead, co-ordinate, and participate in winter & spring operations, including snow removal, plowing, and sanding/salting/sweeping.
• Lead and participate in Waste Management operations, including landfill and transfer site activities, waste collection support, contractor coordination, and diversion programs.
• Provide curbside collection assistance and operate/fill in for co-collection truck drivers as required.
• Repair and replace collection carts and maintain inventory using applicable software systems.
• Monitor rural landfills and transfer sites and complete required inspection forms.
• Provide landfill operations support, including coverage for gatehouse, attendant, and equipment operation (dozer/compactor).
• Perform shift work as required
• Maintain accurate records, including daily logs, inspections, and operational reports.
• Communicate effectively via two-way radio and respond to public inquiries, directing complex issues to the appropriate Supervisor.
• Conduct pre- and post-operational inspections and perform routine maintenance on the equipment used by the Leader, report in accordance with approved check list and maintenance programs.
• Ensure all equipment is operated safely and maintained in a clean, serviceable condition in accordance with legislation and departmental SOPs.
• Identify and report hazards or operational concerns.
• Set up and maintain traffic control in accordance with Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) Book 7.
• Conduct inspections of roadway assets and landfill/site conditions.
• Support data collection, benchmarking, and productivity initiatives.
• Assist with special waste management programs, including bulk item collection and diversion initiatives.
• Participate in by-law enforcement activities as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by Supervisors

Qualifications

• Grade 12 diploma.
• Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, Class “DZ”.
• Minimum two (2) years’ experience in public works and/or waste management operations including snow removal, winter road maintenance operations, landfill operations, and waste management practices.
• Demonstrated leadership ability to direct, co-ordinate, and work effectively with an assigned crew.
• Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to perform physical medium category work and work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and complete required reports.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards, and OTM Book 7.
• Good knowledge of City streets and waste management systems.
• Experience operating equipment such as loaders, dozers/compactors, and co-collection trucks.
• Experience completing daily logs and operational reporting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and municipal software systems (e.g., R-Vision, Maintstar, CW6) is an asset.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with staff and the public.
• Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.
