SUMMARY:
The Dietitian/Nutritionist is responsible for providing culturally safe, community-centered nutrition services to individuals, families, and the broader Timiskaming First Nation community. This role focuses on promoting health, preventing disease, and supporting the management of chronic conditions through nutrition education, clinical care, and community programming. The Dietitian/Nutritionist integrates evidence-based practice with traditional Indigenous knowledge and food systems to support holistic wellness.
KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIREMENTS:
• Strong understanding of public health nutrition and chronic disease prevention.
• Knowledge of Indigenous health determinants, cultural safety, and trauma-informed care.
• Ability to integrate traditional foods and cultural practices into care plans.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organizational and documentation skills.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Clear criminal record check (and vulnerable sector check, if required).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field.
• Registered Dietitian (RD) in good standing with a provincial regulatory body (e.g., College of Dietitians of Ontario or Québec equivalent).
• Minimum 2–3 years of experience in clinical and/or community nutrition preferred.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities is a strong asset.
• Experience in chronic disease management and health promotion.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Clinical Nutrition Services
• Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments for clients across the lifespan.
• Develop, implement, and monitor individualized nutrition care plans.
• Provide medical nutrition therapy for chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, renal disease).
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social service professionals, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in client health records.
2. Community Health Promotion & Education
• Plan and deliver culturally relevant nutrition education workshops and programs.
• Promote healthy eating using both traditional and contemporary food practices.
• Support community initiatives such as prenatal nutrition, child and youth programs, and elder care.
• Develop educational materials tailored to community needs and literacy levels.
3. Indigenous Food Systems & Cultural Integration
• Incorporate traditional foods, harvesting practices, and cultural teachings into nutrition programming.
• Work collaboratively with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to support land-based and culturally grounded initiatives.
• Promote food sovereignty and access to healthy, affordable foods.
4. Program Development & Evaluation
• Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nutrition-related programs and services within the community
• Monitor program outcomes and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
• Assist in grant writing and reporting as required.
