The Misiway Milopemahtesewin Community Health Center (Misiway), located in Timmins, Ontario, provides quality programs and services that honour, respect and support Indigenous culture, values and healing practices, complimented by western approaches to primary health care. Misiway’s Primary Care Clinic provides a comprehensive and coordinated approach to Primary Care needs including support of traditional lifestyle practices. Misiway health care staff work closely with network of community partnerships and relationships with both Indigenous and urban organizations.
The Opportunity:
Job Title: Personal Support Worker, Teleophthalmology Technician-Diabetes Education Program
Salary Range $24.00-$26.00/hour
Bring your experience to our Diabetes Education Program (DEP). This specialized role supports the early detection and prevention of diabetic retinopathy by operating digital retinal imaging equipment and preparing images for remote assessment by ophthalmologists.
Working within a holistic, Indigenous-informed model of care that honours physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, the successful candidate will also support diabetes education programming and basic clinical tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Specialized teleophthalmology training is provided by MMCHC.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate digital retinal imaging equipment to capture and upload high-quality fundus photographs for remote ophthalmologist review
- Prepare clients for retinal screening and ensure comfort, understanding, and image quality
- Maintain, clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot teleophthalmology equipment and manage program supplies
- Schedule and coordinate retinal screening appointments
- Accurately document all screening activities and client interactions in the electronic medical record
- Support the Diabetes Education Program through assistance with education sessions and basic clinical tasks under RN direction
- Deliver care in a culturally safe, respectful, and trauma-informed manner
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and participate in quality improvement activities
As a successful candidate your qualifications will include:
- Personal Support Worker Certificate meeting Ontario PSW Program Standards (or equivalent)
- Valid First Aid & CPR (Level C or HCP) or willingness to obtain
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence and reliable transportation
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical protocols
- Effective communication skills and basic computer proficiency
- Experience working in a clinical setting
- Experience working in electronic medical records system
- Ability to speak Cree or Ojibway is considered an asset
