Building Custodian / Housing Services
Part-Time – Monday to Friday, for up to 28 hours / Potential for permanent full-time hours, including benefits
$28.33 – $33.37 per hour / Vacation pay / Mileage reimbursement, as applicable / Eligible for OMERS pension

The District of Timiskaming Social Services Administration Board supports individuals in need throughout our communities by delivering Children’s Services, Paramedic Services, Ontario Works, and Housing Services through the effective use of available resources and in the best interest of the individuals we support. We are seeking a team member to help care for our housing properties and be an onsite presence for our building tenants.

 

The Building Custodian is responsible for indoor and outdoor property and building maintenance for social housing buildings managed by the DTSSAB. Maintaining a positive rapport with tenants, as a primary point of contact for our residents, allows the Building Custodian to be responsive to tenants’ needs and proactive in fostering a well-maintained living environment.

 

Work assignments are primarily in the Kirkland Lake area, three (3) to four (4) days per week. Coverage elsewhere in the district (i.e.: vacation backfill) may be required. Scheduling will be confirmed with as much advance notice as possible. This position is unionized. 

Responsibilities

  • Interact regularly with building tenants, always with a high degree of tact, professionalism and courtesy
  • Provide person-centered service by responding to routine tenant requests, questions and concerns
  • Clean and maintain interior/exterior of buildings and common areas (i.e.: entrances, walkways, hallways, washrooms, windows)
  • Seasonal duties: shovel, remove snow and sand at entrances and exits and/or perform summer groundskeeping, using manual tools and powered equipment (i.e.: push mower, snow blower, riding mower, other)
  • Dispose of garbage and recyclable items, maintain garbage rooms, clean washers, dryers, air vents, other
  • Perform maintenance and safety checks on equipment and within buildings (i.e., fire alarm testing, emergency power and lighting systems, fire protection systems)
  • Report maintenance needs, deficiencies, safety concerns, damage, vandalism, unusual circumstances/occurrences
  • Perform minor carpentry, repairs, minor plumbing (i.e.: unclogging drains, repairing sinks and toilets.), operate equipment and power tools, perform minor electrical repairs on maximum 110 voltage lines and equipment, replace smoke alarms, other
  • Act as an on-site contact for contractors, and liaise with emergency services (i.e.: fire, police), when required
  • Respond to occasional afterhours callouts (evenings, weekends, holidays) by phone and/or by attending in person, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned (duties vary at each building/property) 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years related experience working in a public setting with frequent interactions with members of the public, performing a wide range of custodial and janitorial tasks, groundskeeping, and/or minor maintenance and repairs (plumbing, electrical, carpentry) using safe working practices. Education or training in a maintenance or trade program is considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered
  • Ability to work independently with limited on-site supervision, capable of following directions, instructions, and procedures
  • Good communication (listening, speaking, and writing) and excellent interpersonal abilities to interact effectively with tenants in a respectful, positive, and empathetic manner and work well with colleagues and supervisors
  • Effective conflict de-escalation response to handle difficult or emotionally charged situations/interactions involving tenants
  • Good judgement and decision-making are critical to refer or escalate non-routine or contentious matters to the supervisor
  • Strong time management to prioritize, organize and schedule tasks efficiently, and adjust to changing circumstances as needed
  • Sound problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills
  • Attention to detail for carefully noticing building/property issues to ensure a well-maintained living environment for tenants
  • Understand health and safety regulations, including WHMIS, building and fire codes for ensuring a safe environment for tenants
  • Computer proficiency, basic mathematical skills, knowledge of general office procedures and technology are important
  • Bilingualism (French and English) is considered an asset
 

Must be able and willing to:

  • Travel daily throughout the assigned service area and/or within the district – including occasionally attending to buildings in Larder Lake, Englehart, New Liskeard, Haileybury, Cobalt (i.e.: backfilling Building Custodians for vacation coverage, etc.)
  • Maintain a valid drivers’ license and have access to a reliable vehicle, since driving is a daily regular requirement
  • Respond to after-hours callouts within 30-minutes (by phone or in person, based on nature of call) during rotating on-call duty
  • Perform physically demanding tasks (i.e.: stand, walk, bend, lift and carry heavy items or supplies for maintaining the property)
