About the position

The Timmins Learning Centre is looking for a dynamic individual who will bring energy to the delivery and growth of the children’s program. Reporting to the Children’s Program Coordinator, this Internship will assist the literacy and numeracy of children through a variety of creative and innovative methods. Working with volunteers, this intern will assist the ongoing learning of children in both a group and individual capacity. Experience working with children a variety of settings will certainly be welcomed as skill sets. Some experience with promotion/marketing and resource development may be required.

The Timmins Learning Centre operates child-focused learning opportunities for those between the ages of Grades 1 & 8. Weekly group and one-on-one sessions are scheduled between 4 and 6 pm, 4 evenings/week, for students seeking to improve their learning skills.  

Skills and Qualifications

 Applicants must possess the following attributes:

  • Post Secondary Education (preferred) or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • Knowledge of children’s literacy development and ability to tutor children
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Assessment of student’s levels and abilities in reading and math
  • Successful program planning, facilitation and supervisory experience
  • Excellent public relations and volunteer management
  • Bilingualism (French/ English) is considered an asset

Candidate criteria listed as follows:

  • Candidate must be a new entrant into the workforce, transitioning to a new career or unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
  • Candidate must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Check will be required prior to commencing

This is a one-year internship position beginning in January, with possibility of extension. 35 hours per week at $22/hr.
