The Timmins Native Friendship Centre (TNFC) is an award-winning Friendship Centre in that provides services and programs to support the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples and assist in their inclusion and participation in urban life. Primary Objectives
The FASD-CN Program strives to assist with FASD resources available to Urban Indigenous people. It offers both traditional and contemporary approaches to FASD, on-site training and consultations. The program also provides intervention, prevention and programming including community development related to FASD. The FASD-CN Program provides a unique wholistic component to its direct-service users, as it provides wraparound supports to direct-service users and families.
- Increase the awareness in pregnant women regarding proper nutrition and the impacts of malnutrition on infant development and substance usage;
- Increase youth awareness of the prevention and impacts of FASD and healthy sexuality;
- Improve access to Indigenous FASD and nutrition services for clients and their families.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary education diploma in Indigenous Studies, Social Work or Health Sciences, and/or combination of an equivalent and relevant education.
- Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach.
- Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide/Eat Right Ontario.
- Experience and/or training on FASD pre-alcohol syndrome
- Strong understanding of the Child and Family Services Act and Ontario Children’s Aid Societies with particular emphasis of impact on indigenous families.
- Must possess skills and experience in presenting educational workshops and facilitating groups.
- Self-motivated, able to schedule and prioritize work.
- Good judgment, adaptability and willingness to learn.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with staff and community members.
- To be knowledgeable of and to work with community agencies and referral sources.
- Knowledge of the Friendship Centre movement, its aims and objectives.
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated and related work experience within an Indigenous organization or community.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal cultures.
- Ability to speak Cree and/or Ojibway an asset.
- Current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR; WHMIS; and Food Handler Certificate.
- Excellent knowledge and ability to work proficiently with the company software packages, e-mail and the Internet.
- Must be licensed to drive a motor vehicle, insured to do so in the Province of Ontario and have access to a safe and reliable vehicle.
- Ability to provide a clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Persons Check
Working Hours:
Works a flexible 35 hour work week,. It is mandatory to ensure the program consists of a minimum of two (2) evening or weekend programming per month. Salary range $ 55,000-$60,000, Health benefits, cultural and wellness days.
