Job Title: Equipment Operator
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Director of Municipal Services under the direction of the Public Works Lead Hand
Status: Permanent Full-time,
Hours of work: 40 hours/week – Monday to Friday (may include evenings, weekends, on-call)
Rate of Pay: $38.64 per hour
Benefits: Benefits and Defined Benefit Pension

Position Summary
The Township of Fauquier-Strickland is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our Public Works Department as an Equipment Operator. The successful candidate will operate vehicles and equipment for the purpose of maintaining municipal roads and will assist in the general maintenance and repair of all public works facilities, properties, operations, and equipment. This individual will play a key role in supporting the upkeep of our road network and other municipal assets. Strong collaboration and communication skills, along with a commitment to safety and competent work practices, are essential to successfully carrying out the duties of this position.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Facilities & Roads

  • Assist in general maintenance and repair of all public works facilities & operations assigned by the Director of Municipal Services and communicated by the Lead Hand.
  • Assist in the maintenance and safety of all municipal roads and culverts etc.,
  • Operate the grader, snowplows, sand truck, dump truck, backhoe, and other municipal equipment, safely and in accordance with all policy, procedures, by-laws, Ministry guidelines, regulations and legislation, and as personally licensed to operate.
  • Perform day-to-day maintenance of the assigned equipment and assist in minor repairs as required.
  • Report any defects to machinery or property promptly to the Lead Hand / Director of Municipal Services.
  • Maintain vehicles and machinery in neat and tidy order.
  • Comply with all municipal and provincial occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all safety apparel/equipment when required.
  • Utilize power tools and hand tools to complete tasks.
  • Assist in the maintenance, construction and reconstruction of Municipal facilities, structures and property.
  • Regularly inspect and report on the condition of Municipal facilities, structures, and property
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Parks and Cemetery

  • Maintain laws and flower beds, assist summer students with same
  • Assist with the clearing of snow and ice clearing, spreading of sand and salt at municipal facilities, walkways and parking areas to maintain public safety.
  • Maintenance and repair of walking paths, trails, park structures and facilities.
  • Assist in seasonal preparation and maintenance of the public skating rink ice surface.
  • Ensure cleanliness of park grounds for safety of public.

Landfill

  • Assist with operational requirements of the landfill as needed, including supporting site operations and compliance activities, and performing equipment operation and maintenance duties.



Education, Qualifications & Skills

  • OSSD or equivalent.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “A” or “D” Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement and a clean driving record (driver’s abstract will be requested).
  • Hands-on experience operating municipal heavy equipment (grader, backhoe, loader, excavator, snowplow, tractor)
  • Experience with road maintenance standards (e.g. Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards), municipal infrastructure, drainage, and winter control
  • Ability to read and understand current legislation as it pertains to the Hours of Work legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Minimum Maintenance Standards, Municipal policies, Operational Guidelines, and other legislation and laws as applicable.
  • First Aid / CPR, WHMIS, and other safety certifications
  • Sound judgment, decision-making, problem solving
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, initiative
  • Ability to work outdoors, in all weather conditions, and perform physical work
  • Customer service orientation and diplomacy in dealing with public


Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Field work in outdoor environments under variable weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain)
  • Exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, noise, dust, and possible hazards
  • Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work as required (especially during winter)
  • On-call duties to respond to emergencies
  • Required to lift, carry, push, or pull moderately heavy materials and equipment (e.g. up to 50–60 lbs or more)
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE): hard hat, safety boots, high visibility clothing, etc.
