CHOOSE LIFE YOUTH WORKER
Brief description
A Choose Life Youth Worker (in partnership with Nishnawbe Aski Nation) implements
community-based mental health and land-based programming to support Indigenous youth, focusing on suicide prevention, bullying, discrimination, substance use, family issues and cultural pride. They foster trust through mentorship, organize cultural workshops, and offer one-on-one support for youth at risk. The position of the Choose Life Youth Worker is responsible for the well being of minors, creating programs for the betterment of the life of children and adolescents and providing peer mentoring, guidance and support to children and youth who reside at Apitipi Anicinapek Nation.
Tasks
· Offering peer support and mentoring for children and adolescents regarding health issues, substance abuse, physical abuse, social adjustment, suicide prevention:
o Peer mentoring and support to children and adolescents through healthy relationship building
o providing guidance to overcome the aforementioned issues;
o advocating for youth in the community through cultivating connections to resources and culture
· Case management and reporting:
o Maintain accurate records of attendance to programs
o report any disclosures immediately to a supervisor and document the incident
· Organizing group and activities (e.g., programs and activities, social gatherings, or community events):
o Develop and facilitate youth programs and activities that focus on culture, land based, traditional practices
o Work with the youth to develop programs aligned with self-empowerment; and
o keeping records of assistance and of the progress made.
· Collaboration with community departments and partners to offer unique services.
o While working with the education department, provide breakfast program and lunches for elementary and high school students.
o Work with other AAN departments in special event planning
Qualifications and requirements
• Knowledge of Residential School Syndrome and Intergenerational Trauma would be an asset.
• Strong understanding of Indigenous Culture, traditions and land-based activities
• Bilingual an asset
• Previous experience working with at risk youth
• Police Check Vulnerable Sector
